Construction insolvencies break records

Population growth of 392,700

Population growth in Australia for the March 2026 quarter was +130,887, slightly below the prior year equivalent figure.

Over the year to March, the population  change was +392,700, mainly accounted for by Victoria (+109,500), New South Wales (+97,000), and Queensland (+90,100).

As at March, Western Australia still had the highest rate of population growth at +2.1 per cent, although this is likely to slow into next year.

In real time, later today the estimated resident population of the country will tick over 28.1 million.

Net interstate migration from New South Wales to Queensland is now slowing as south-east Queensland has lost some of its affordability advantage.

The government has essentially failed to meet any of its population targets to date, but is proposing to cull temporary visa numbers (including for backpackers) to slow the rate of population growth.

In other news, construction insolvencies exploded to a record high month of 941 in August, driven by an extraordinary 705 insolvencies in New South Wales as the major developer Bathla collapsed.

It's already a record high for construction insolvencies in the September quarter, and we're only two months in...

Credit funds and analysts have reported that many developers are on the brink of collapse as apartment pre-sales dry up, and further monetary tightening is sure to tip more companies into insolvency over as the year progresses.
