A remarkable opportunity for Australia?

More donuts

The state Victoria has recorded a 9th consecutive day with zero cases of COVID-19.

Although some cases continue for returned travellers in quarantine, Australia recorded another day of zero local infections today.

Mercifully there have been no deaths attributed to COVID-19 for some time, and the ICUs remain empty of virus cases.

While some 'active cases' remain in New South Wales, Victoria now has only four active cases remaining, and there are none across all of the other states and territories.

The virus has been all but eliminated in Australia, which is a remarkable result.

The road ahead

The US recorded a recorded high 125,000 positive known cases yesterday, while France hit a record high of more than 60,000 known new infections in a single day.

Many European countries are grappling with very high numbers of cases as the colder winter month encroach, and lockdowns are following apace.

This puts Australia - which has all but eliminated the virus domestically - in an unusual position, with some big decisions to be made.

Take the higher education sector as an example (though you could equally consider tourism, or numerous other sectors).

Higher education facilities and related businesses are having to run with two scenarios for 2021.

One, a 'boom' scenario, where Australia finds a way to open its borders with self-isolation requirements, thus attracting the bulk of the students currently uncertain about whether to move to Australia, Canada, or the United Kingdom.

In the second alternative or 'bust' scenario, Australia effectively keeps the international border closed, and forces many such facilities and businesses into administration.

2020 has been extremely unpredictable, so who knows what 2021 will bring?
