"Generation Rent" takes out 29,000 mortgages in a month

Interesting data from the Council for Mortgage Lenders in the UK showing 28,800 mortgages written for first-time buyers in one month in May 2014.

That's the greatest number of loans for first-timers in six years.

It's also an increase of 19% y/y.

And in terms of value, first-timer loans totaled £3.9 billion (+30% y/y).


As for affordability, first-time buyers bought properties at a multiple of 3.43 times gross incomes, with interest repayments accounting for only 11.7% of gross income.

A huge proportion of loans is now being write for the first-timer market, thereby ending the "Generation Rent" meme.
