Increased humanitarian intake

In September 2015, Australia announced that it would make an extra 12,000 humanitarian places available in response to the crisis in Syria and Iraq.

This was in addition to the existing 13,750 places already available under the humanitarian programme, which will increase to 18,750 for the 2018-19 financial year. 

You can see the surge in permanent settlers from the region which ramped up strongly from August 2016 in the chart below. 


There were some 7,870 permanent settlers from Iraq in Australia last year, up from 2,420 in 2015.
