The January figures for housing finance were a little softer, with investor mortgages declining a little in the month.
The total value of dwelling commitments year on year remains strong.
The ABS also reported number of first home buyer commitments as a percentage of total owner occupied housing finance commitments rose to 13.2% in January 2014 from 12.7% in December 2013.
The most promising news was in the figures for new home lending.
The number of commitments for new homes and construction is up by a little over 17% over the past year.
The Reserve Bank is hopeful that dwelling construction can fill some of the hole left in the economy by the mining construction boom.
These figures are a step in the right direction.
